Best in Show Award at 55th AOC

news

Interface Concept is delighted to be part of the Best in Show Award winners, and to have received a 3-star award for its Cometh4590a Dual Domain Ethernet Switch, in the Radar/Electronic Warfare Category, at the 55th Annual AOC International Symposium & Convention - (27-29 November 2018 - Washington, DC). This prize was awarded by the Military Embedded Systems magazine.

The Cometh4590a Dual Domain Ethernet Switch, supports the latest VITA 65 Open VPX Slot and Module profiles that align with the Sensor Open System Architecture (SOSA) snap shot two. It has been specifically tailored to meet current high speed Ethernet network data rates required by MOSA standards in development by the DoD.

It is the first and only 3U VPX 10/40 Gigabit Ethernet Layer 3 switch currently on the embedded market which has two separate and independent on-board Ethernet switch matrices - one for the Data Plane and one for the Control Plane. These two separate switch matrices or packet processors are managed by two independent dual core processors. Each matrix supports separate instances of Interface Concept Switchware network management which allows independent network configuration for features such as network optimization, monitoring and security.

In addition to offering the outstanding switching capabilities you’ve come to expect from Interface Concept, this high-performance Layer3 switch can be remotely configured by the Switchware web interface, SNMP or CLI interfaces. It features a total of 41 SerDes or Lanes routed to the rear VPX connectors as 1000Base-KX, 10GBase-KR or even 40GBase-KR4 ports and to the front panel as 10GBase-SR or 1000Base-SX fiber optical ports.

Moreover, the Cometh4590a is fully compatible with the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) required by the most recent high performance VPX systems, and it supports Precision Time Protocol (PTP) IEEE 1588-2008 (v2) for networks requiring sub-microsecond  synchronization capabilities throughout the IP network.

Furthermore, other critical signals are implemented such as NVMRO that allows write conditioning of non-volatile memory

The design density of the Cometh4590a includes over 1500 components on a 3U VPX footprint. This, combined with the large volume of high-speed signal convergence to the backplane and the resulting need for heat dissipation management, made developing the Cometh4590a quite challenging.

It should be noted that while the Cometh4590a can operate in an air-cooled environment, it was designed primarily to be used in its available conduction-cooled environmental grade in conduction-cooled systems.

The US DoD CMOSS (C4ISR Modular Open Suite of Standards) hardware convergence initiative is a good example of an application for the Interface Concept Cometh4590a, where it can be easily integrated with the latest Interface Concept High performance Xeon-D SBC (IC-INT-VPX3e) and UltraScale FPGA platforms (IC-FEP-VPX3d).

  • It is the first and only Dual Domain Ethernet Switch on the embedded market offering 10/40 Gigabit Ethernet Layer 3 switch capabilities.
  • This switch is the backbone of all the new VPX 3U systems that support SDR, ELINT, EW, or Radar applications.
  • It complies with all the requirements of the organizations designing systems for the application mentioned before:
    1. Separated data plane and control plane
    2. Independent management processor for each plane
    3. Low latency switch capabilities
    4. Support of QoS, NVMRO, IPMI, PTP
  • With this product, IC met successfully the challenges of board density and then placement, routability and signal integrity.
