IC-e6-PMCa is a PrPMC/XMC mezzanine card, based on the Freescale MPC7447A or MPC7448 processor. It is designed to provide the highest level of performance and integration available today. These processors are software compatible with the MPC7xx family of processors from Freescale.

The MPC7447A or 7448 is a high-performance embedded e600 core. These low power PowerPC processors are ideal for application in the fields of defense, industrial automation, medical imaging.

IC-e6-PMCa can be used in conjunction with CompactPCI, VME carriers or proprietary design. Many highly integrated applications can be used on-board :
  • Leading-edge computing

  • Embedded network control

  • Signal processing, etc.

Description

IC-e6-PMCa is powered by a MPC7447A or a MPC7448, being part of the PowerPC processor family. These processors feature a high-frequency super scalar PowerPC core capable of issuing four instructions per clock cycle into 11 independent execution units : four integer units, one double-precision floating point unit, four Altivec units, load/store and branch processing units. This e600 core provides 2310 Dhrystone 2.1MIPS @ 1GHz . The e600 core is planned to scale beyond 2GHz and to support Multiprocessing Chip. The MPC744A also integrates 2*32KB L1 caches and a 512KB L2-ECC cache.

IC-e6-PMCa implements a DiscoveryTMIII chipset to fill out the processor. This solution includes major enhancements as : data streaming on MPX bus, read memory latency and cache coherency improvements.

The MV64460 indeed, adds 2 Mbytes of high speed SRAM, two XOR DMA (useful for RAID, iSCSI) and four IDMA engines. This board implements up to 512Mbytes of on-board DDR-ECC memory. Optionally the IC-e6-PMCa can be equipped with a SODIMM site with up to 2GB.

IC-e6-PMCa integrates many communication functions : three Giga Ethernet channels, two multi-purpose serial controllers...

A 64-bit PCI or PCI-X controller allows the IC-e6-PMCa to be used in several PMC or PrPMC configurations in compliance with PCI 2.2 or PCI-X. This board is configurable in Monarch or non-Monarch mode.

IC-e6-PMCa uses a new power management. The processor clock can be changed dynamically following the temperature information monitored by a sensing diode included in the die.

- Highly integrated Marvell DiscoveryTM III system controller

- Three Ethernet 10/100/1000TX ports with :
   - support for Jumbo frames
   - virtual Cable tester, implemented in the Ethernet transceivers, providing a remote
    identification of potential cable malfunctions as excessive pair skew, cable
    opens, impedance mismatch…
- One of these Ethernet ports is routed to front RJ45 and two on rear Pn4 connector

- Dual multi-purpose serial interfaces (on front)

IC-e6-PMCa can be used with many major RTOS and Linux. 

 

IC-e6-PMCa on-board firmware

The basic firmware takes in charge Freescale’s new MPC7447A or 7448 (available shortly) which is the legacy of the PowerQUICC architecture. IC’s on-board firmware is a comprehensive set of software stored in flash memory. Two versions of software are available : Uboot or IC's firmware. The functionalities are very similar. 

IC_Boot

This module is called by the reset vector when the board is powered up. It initializes the PowerPC and the DiscoveryTMIII system controller, performs a comprehensive set of Power-on self-tests, the module IC_Bios, before using the PCI bridge and jumping in different applications according to the va-lues stored in memory.

 

IC_Bios

This module allows the user to access the specific IC-e6-PMCa hardware resources via an easy-to-use API. A set of about 60 functions is provided.

 

IC_Tools

It is a firmware monitor which allows loading files from Ethernet via Bootp, running files in RAM or flashing them. In addition, it allows to display or mo-dify the RAM data. To end with, it enables the user to perform maintenance tests.

 

IC-BSP basic
These BSPs products are based on the standard distribution of the OS editor. They take in charge hardware initialization, interrupt handling and generation, hardware clock and timer services, memory management, PCI management, mapping of memory spaces, serial ports, MAC driver for Gigabit ports.

Interface Concept provides BSP for VxWorks® and Linux® operating systems. Other RTOS (LynxOS, Integrity...) can be ported on request.
